Speaking Up For Myself!

I was contemplating whether or not to write an article about my views regarding the Singapore General Election 2011 that has just passed, but after reading an article "Past struggles forgotten by young: MM", I've decided that my voice needs to be heard, or rather, I need to make things clear, but before I start, I will like to make it clear that the following views are my opinions and I am not representing the Generation Y in general, who am I to represent all of them anyway?

Dear Sir, with all due respect, youngsters like me have, and will not forget how you bring Singapore to where it is now, how successful we have been, and will be. I am grateful to you for the efforts you have put in for Singapore over the past 46 years, however, these are years ago. You cannot use what you've been doing for the past 46 years (or more) and enforce it on my generation, the Generation Y. You are dealing with a totally different group of individuals. Unlike the Baby Bloomers, who are very loyal, the Generation X, who have families to look after, we Generation Y are people who are brought up to speak up for ourselves and have our very own ideas on how things should work. You cannot force your ideas on my generation as this will definitely backfire.

Let us move to my next point, the campaignings during the General Election 2011 period. I've understand that you and your team have "warned" people who are voting for the oppositions. Let me quote a few examples I found online.

In recent speeches, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong — Lee Kwan Yew's son — has warned voters to avoid opposition candidates, reminding them that the government favours pro-PAP districts with funding for improvements to the public housing where about 80 per cent of Singaporeans live.

"Don't rock this foundation," Lee said last week. "Remember, don't risk your assets, property values, job opportunities."

Voting and sacred and secret, it is the choices of the people of Singapore, why do we have to resort to, what I feel like threatening, to get your votes. Perhaps threatening is too strong a word, but I cannot find another word to replace it. If your team is truly strong and has been serving your people the right way, you do not have to resort to all these measures to get your vote.

I would also like to comment on the way that the campaignings are carried out (for both the PAP and the oppositions). A lot of the campaigns are done in such a way that the teams tell the people what they want to do for us, AND, bring the other party down by saying things that are against them (what they have not done well, having no track records etc.). Instead of focusing on other team's shortcomings, why not focus on your own shortcomings, and tell us how you can improve on it!

Yes Prime Minister Sir, I agreed, and noticed, that you have done that near the end of the campaigning period, but don't you find that it is all too late? People sees it as a last resort for pity, and not a sincere speech about how you are going about to improve your team's flaws.

Personally, I feel that there are a few major flaws in the voting system. Let me elaborate more in the next few paragraphs.

Firstly, I do not agree with writing down our "number" against the voting booklet as it defeats the purpose of the "Your vote is secret". It is not hard to find out who voted for who. Our names are check and marked on the nominal roll, so why go to the extra extend to write down our "number" on the voting booklet. Is it a measure to instill fear in the people who are going to vote against the PAP?

Secondly, I feel that the GRC voting system has a huge flaw. We are not voting people who are worthy and talented into the Parliament, but as a team as a whole. Why not change the voting by listing out the names and pictures of all the candidates, and we mark half of the people there that we think are worthy to be in the Parliament, worthy of the $16,000 monthly salary from the Tax Payer's money.

We are voting for some people with no leadership qualities and skills into the Parliament just because he/she is in a team with stronger members, and losing talents such as Mr George Yeo, Mr Chiam (who has been fighting hard for us commoners, the past few decades) and so on and so forth. These talents who can serve the people well are going to lose their jobs, and then when we go for "Meet-The-People" session in a certain GRC, all we are getting out of it is "I don't know what to say", while stamping his/her feet.

I am sorry but I have to say, I do not want to judge your maturity base on your age, as you can see a huge difference in how a 24 years old candidate handle situations as compared to a 27 years old. Age is not an issue, is the mindset.

Next issue I want to bring up is of course an issue brought up by the NSP in the Tampines GRC, cost of HDB apartments. I feel that a certain minister contradicted himself when he said that if the prices of HDB apartments remains low, then it is not worth the investment (not his exact words), and at the same time, introducing "cooling off" methods to bring down the HDB apartments prices and prevent speculations.

The initial idea of HDB apartments is to provide affordable houses for the middle, and lower class income citizens, however, prices have rocketed to sky-high and we have got to work our whole life away just to pay for a roof over our head.

Sir, I am not against you, so let me be fair here. I do not agree with the policy that NSP brought up, the same value for housing throughout the area, near or far away from the amenities such as the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations, and to put it crudely, I think it is bullsh*t.

I feel that we should set the prices (across the nation) as such that if you are within a distant of say, 1KM from amenities such as the MRT stations and schools, the prices will be at $X/sqf, and cheaper when further. And prices should also be determined by the area it is in. This kind of fixed prices will ensure that HDB apartments are affordable for the middle and lower income group, and is that not the main purpose why HDB is set up for?

I have been reading an article, and how reliable it is, I am not sure, but I feel that there is a certain truth in it. Let me copy and paste the whole article here (in case the link gets deleted):

PAP already knew the results hours before actual elections

Friction in PAP
Heard this from a reliable source amongst the highest echelons of the PAP.

The PAP was well aware that Aljunied is a risky proposition for them. This was clear even in 2006 and GY just scraped through.

The PAP also knew that this time LTK is going to contest the Aljunied GRC, especially after the electoral boundaries were redrawn. They had factored that in and they knew that Aljunied is a gonna in that case.

There was apparently considerable thinking to move GY to East coast GRC so that his success is guaranteed. This was mooted by GCT. It carried through the day and apparently GY was also sure that he would be moved to East Coast.

Suddenly for no apparent reason, Lim Swee Say was moved to East Coast and GY was retained at Aljunied. Apparently the decision was taken by LHL, TCH and WKS. No one knows the rationale for that decision.

There are 2 theories going around:

One, they didn't want to sacrifice Lim Swee Say and wanted a safe seat for him.
Second, some sections in the PAP believed that GY was gaining international stature (much more than the PM himself) and wanted to cut down his size. He was also considered to be GCT's man and LHL wanted him out respectably.

One should also note that it is only GCT who is making statements supporting GY. LHL is conspicuous by his silence on GCT. LKY's threat to Aljunied residents (leaving residents confused as per GY) is actually sounding the death knell for GY.

So, PAP wants GY to lose.
If this has even some truth to it, one can easily speculate that there's enough dissent even within PAP ranks and one just has to wait for Mentor Lee to exit for the dissent to come out in the open.

Based on last night's appraisal at PAP's HQ, they have given up on Aljunied and Hougang.

Everyone is keenly watching the Bishan - Toa Payoh GRC as that seems to be at risk now.

This is astonishing! The results turned out exactly how PAP wanted!

This is not exactly, but to a certain extend similar to what I was discussing with my cousins and friends before I even read this article. Yes, this is the kind of image you have been portraying to me, I shall not represent the whole Singapore here.

I have also watched a video regarding the walk-over of Tanjong Pagar GRC. I do not know how trust-worthy the video is, but I feel that it is worth a watch and let us consider and analyse.

I've been reading articles online (as I feel that the local media is very much controlled and is not as reliable and fair, sorry but to say that), and once read an article written by someone from overseas in reply to our MM Lee. I am sorry I cannot find the link, but this was mentioned in the article.

"Is growing GDP a measure to the quality of life? What about people like us who lives in with the nature, enjoying the fresh air, are we having a lower quality of life?" (This are not the exact words, but the meaning is there.

Of course, there are bias articles that were anti-PAP online such as the undermentioned, but these are only available online, as I have mentioned that our local media is very much controlled

I need your urgent advice about employing a maid. As a busy mother, I need someone reliable to help out at home.

My maid is from Profits Agency Pte (PAP) and she has worked for me for a long time. Her mother worked for my parents and did an excellent job, so I had faith in her. For several years her performance has been very good, but recently she has become arrogant and insensitive, and is making lots of mistakes.

For example:
1) She flooded my kitchen – she told me that the drain pipe has blocked (she was supposed to clear it once a month but didn’t). Then she assured me that it is very rare and won’t happen again in the near future. Guess what? It flooded again within a year!
2) She didn’t close a window and my terrier dog escaped. I was so worried cos he is dangerous and could bite lots of people. After the incident, she didn’t apologise and just shrugged her shoulders saying “What to do, it has happened.” Fortunately my neighbor found the dog and we locked it up again.
3) Without consulting me, she has been bringing in strangers for my house’s maintenance work. She says they charge low wages and keep costs down, but they eat my food, make a lot of noise and rest on my bed. I think they even tried to seduce my husband. It stopped feeling like my home, more like a cheap hotel, and I don’t always want to come back at the end of the day.
4) When she first came to work for me, I instructed her to clean the different parts of the house at least once a week. But for some time she has stopped taking care of the bedrooms of PP and H; they are now dirty and messy. I asked why and she told me that the kids had been disobedient, so she was neglecting their bedrooms as a punishment (she has forgotten that she is paid to clean all the rooms).

Even though my maid has worked for me for many years and I value what she has done in the past, I think she is now getting complacent. Her attitude is imperious and dismissive. She ignores my comments and basically treats my feedback as “noise”. I wrote to the agency about her behavior; they assured me that they are the best agency around and all their maids are “Committed to Serve” – but I think it is just rhetoric and I don’t see that in her actions. Her salary is much higher than maids in other countries, but the agency say this is to keep her honest and stop her moving to another employer. They say there is a limited supply of maids, and Singapore isn’t big enough for more than one good maid agency, so I should not trust their competitors.

I have to decide whether to renew my maid’s 5-year employment contract. When we discussed this she said that she is now part of a team, and if I want her I must also accept her friends doing part-time work for me. One friend is very inexperienced, can’t do basic tasks or explain what she intends to do. I suspect that she is actually underage. When interviewed, she only seemed interested in her days-off and visiting Universal Studios.

When she couldn’t answer my questions she stomped her foot and exclaimed, “I don’t know what to say!” But I am still expected to pay her a high salary. Now there happen to be a few other maid agencies – Workhard Pte (WP), New Solutions Pte (NSP), Super Personnel Pte (SPP) and Star Domestica Pte (SDP) – that offered me some helpers who seem sincere, genuine and intelligent. They are keen to work, willing to assist me and have a good attitude. I know that they may take a bit of time to learn how everything works, but frankly I am inclined to give them a chance.

People say that the devil you know is better than one you don’t. But I feel that I can’t tahan my current maid anymore.

Do you think I should sack my current maid and try out a new one? Appreciate your advice.

Dead End

I know that a lot of people of my age are afraid of voting for the PAP because they are afraid they will be unable to get HDB apartments in future if they want to get married and all, but dear government, I like you to know that I voted for the opposition, not because I want to oppose you. If a lousy opposition party (I do not wish to name names) with stupid and unrealistic plans came to the GRC I belong to and contest, I will definitely vote for you too. Like mentioned on my Twitter and Facebook accounts, "Just to be clear,I'm not anti-PAP.I'm as disappointed when George Yeo lost.I'm disappointed that people who don't deserve it took the seats."

I am grateful for your past contributions, but it is time for us to be move on. "If we are going to feel in-debt to the PAP, we will forever be in debt."-Anonymous.

Our GDP has been growing, our country has been doing very well monetary wise, but have us, citizen been doing well financially? When company cut cost to increase their profits to improve our GDP, what are the cost we are cutting? Our wages? With the rising cost of living, and our never-growing pay package, how are we expected to survive?

The government has been talking about low birth-rates and let me show you one of the link to the low birth rate:

Salary remains the same -> Rising cost of living, in bringing up children, in buying a house -> having children means I've to work till I die. What is the point of me getting married and having decendants? And with the amount of stress we are facing at work (despite our low wages), who have the time and mood for pro-creation?

Bringing in foreign talents so that our GDP will grow, but you fail to see, you are bringing in cheaper workers, making Singaporeans wages seem so expensive, and hence foreigners get the jobs and not us, locals! And in the view point of an employer, why pay more for someone who has to be absent for 4 months after giving birth, and disappear once a year for reservist when I can pay a cheaper worker and he/she will have lesser chance of being absent (forcefully)?

I think I should end here before my post end up as a story book. To anyone I've offended in this post, I hereby apologize. I am only a 21 years old boy and that's my 2 cents worth of what I feel about Singapore. If you are going to sue me for anything, sorry but to say, I've got no money so just send me to the jail or perhaps...

Regards,
JSlogy.
